Study Leadership

The ATTRACT Trial Steering Committee is comprised of international leaders in DVT research, education, and clinical practice from a broad range of clinical and non-clinical disciplines:


Suresh Vedantham, MD
Dr. Suresh Vedantham is the National Principal Investigator for the ATTRACT Trial and its Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC). Dr. Vedantham is a Professor of Radiology & Surgery in the Interventional Radiology Section at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. A practicing interventional radiologist, he has extensive experience with the clinical use and study of Pharmacomechanical Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis (PCDT). Dr. Vedantham also serves as the Chair of the Venous Disease Coalition and is a member of the Executive Council of the Society of Interventional Radiology.


Samuel Z. Goldhaber, MD
Dr. Samuel Z. Goldhaber is the Study Chair for the ATTRACT Trial. Dr. Goldhaber is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and serves as the Director of the Venous Thromboembolism Research Group at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. A practicing Cardiologist, he has led numerous clinical DVT treatment trials. Dr. Goldhaber also serves as President of the North American Thrombosis Forum.


Clive Kearon, MB PhD
Dr. Clive Kearon is the Principal Investigator of the Data Coordinating Center at the Ontario Clinical Oncology Group at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Kearon is a Professor of Medicine at McMaster University. Dr. Kearon has extensive methodological expertise with the conduct of clinical DVT trials, including several in which PTS was studied.





David Cohen, MD, MSc
Dr. David Cohen chairs the Health Economic Core Laboratory for the ATTRACT Trial, which is based at St. Luke’s Mid-America Heart Institute in Kansas City, MO. Dr. Cohen is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and Director of Cardiovascular Research for the Mid-America Heart Institute. He is a nationally recognized expert in the integration of health economic evaluations into randomized clinical trials.



Anthony J. Comerota, MD
Dr. Anthony Comerota is a member of the Site Monitoring Committee, Enrollment Committee, and Medical Therapy Committee for the ATTRACT Trial. As a Professor of Surgery (Vascular) at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and Director of the Jobst Vascular Institute in Toledo, OH, Dr. Comerota has treated many patients with the Post-Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS) and is a nationally recognized expert in the use of aggressive therapies to treat proximal DVT.



Heather Gornik, MD
Dr. Heather Gornik chairs the Medical Therapy Committee for the ATTRACT Trial. Dr. Gornik is a Staff Physician in Cardiovascular Medicine and the Director of Vascular Medicine Research at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH.




Michael R. Jaff, DO
Dr. Michael R. Jaff chairs the Vascular Ultrasound Core Laboratory (VasCore - Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA) for the ATTRACT Trial. Dr. Jaff is an Associate Professor of Vascular Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the Medical Director of VasCore, and the Director of Vascular Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA.





Jim Julian, MMath
Jim Julian is the primary Biostatistician for the ATTRACT Trial  . Dr. Julian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology at McMaster University. He has directed the statistical analysis for a number of multicenter clinical DVT trials.







Susan Kahn, MD MSc
Dr. Susan Kahn chairs the Clinical Outcomes Committee for the ATTRACT Trial. Dr. Kahn is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Medicine at McGill University and is a world authority on the Post-Thrombotic Syndrome.




Stephen Kee, MD
Dr. Stephen Kee is the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation’s representative on the Steering Committee. A practicing interventional radiologist, he will oversee the functions conducted by the Cooperative Alliance for Interventional Radiology Research (CAIRR), the Clinical Trials Division of the SIR Foundation. Dr. Kee is an Associate Professor of Radiology and the Director of Interventional Radiology at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA.





Lawrence Lewis, MD

Dr. Lawrence Lewis is a member of the Enrollment Committee. Dr. Lewis, an emergency medicine physician, is the Director of Research in the Emergency Medicine Division at the Washington University School of Medicine and chaired the Division from 1994-2004.








Elizabeth Mahoney, ScD
Dr. Elizabeth Mahoney is a member of the Health Economic Core Laboratory for the ATTRACT Trial and serves as the Director of the Health Economics & Technology Assessment Group at the Mid-America Heart Institute in Kansas City, MO. Dr. Mahoney is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.



Timothy P. Murphy, MD
Dr. Timothy P. Murphy participates as a member of the Operations Committee and the Site Monitoring Committee for the ATTRACT Trial. Dr. Murphy, a practicing interventional radiologist, is a Professor of Radiology at Brown University Medical School in Providence, RI.





Mahmood K. Razavi, MD
Dr. Mahmood Razavi chairs the Interventions Committee for the ATTRACT Trial. Dr. Razavi is a practicing interventional radiologist who participated in the pre-clinical development and early clinical testing of the PCDT methods that will be used in the study. Dr. Razavi is the Director of Clinical Trials at St. Joseph’s Vascular Institute in Irvine, CA.
